Recipe: Simple Syrup for Cocktails
Simple syrup is an essential ingredient for cocktail-making. It’s also – as its name suggests – incredibly easy to make from scratch, comprising just sugar and water. Simple!
WHAT IS SIMPLE SYRUP?
Simple syrup is simply, sugar syrup, made from sugar and water. That’s it. Whilst it can technically be bought, there really is no reason why you can’t make your own at home for pennies, keeping a batch ready in your fridge for all your mixed drink and baking needs.
RECIPE: SIMPLE SYRUP
The most common simple syrup recipe used by bartenders is made at a 1:1 ratio of sugar to water. Most cocktail recipes you come across will use simple syrup of this ration unless otherwise stated. If you prefer a sweeter syrup, all you need to do is increase the ratio to 2:1 sugar to water.
INGREDIENTS (Yields 1 cup of syrup)
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of water
HOW TO MAKE IT:
1. Boil water in a pan
2. Add sugar to the boiling water and stir until it has dissolved fully
3. Allow to cool and pour syrup mixture into a sealable, sterilised bottle. This can be stored in the fridge for up to a month
You can make sugar syrups with most sugars. Demerara sugar syrup is great for adding a richer flavour to cocktails such as Old Fashioneds, whilst coconut sugar can be fun in light style Tiki cocktails
