A 14th generation port producer
Fernando van Zeller
In the early 1600s, the Portuguese registers showed an entry for a wine producer named Jorge Fernandes, working alongside his son-in-law, Francisco da Silva Moura. These men are the ancestors of Fernando van Zeller, the fourteenth generation of a continual line of Portuguese port producers – the longest unbroken chain of any family in the region.
Today, Fernando owns and operates what is now the Barão de Vilar production company. Menéres is one of their four lines of ports, named after Arnaldo Menéres, a family ancestor, and is the highest-quality range currently being produced by the family. This is saying a lot as the van Zeller family owns the deepest and most desirable stock of aged tawny in Portugal, with an inventory of thousands of barrels of aged wine.
The grapes used to produce Menéres ports come from the two family vineyards, the Quinta do Saião and the Quinta do Zom. After being cut and harvested by hand, they are cold-macerated before entering the fermentation process. Ports differ from most other fortified wines in that the fortification happens during fermentation rather than after: Menéres is fortified with Spanish grape brandy when it reaches between 100g/l and 120g/l of sugar.
Aging to develop their characteristics
Fernando van Zeller’s company is the largest independent port producer in Portugal (and also the fastest growing). Fourteen generations of familial expertise and passion for winemaking has culminated in great success, and in a selection of wines of unrivalled quality. By never losing sight of his ancestors’ dreams, Fernando continues to create, innovate, and produce beautifully stylish and luxurious traditional ports.
