A 4th Generation Cognac Distiller
Fanny Fougerat is a 4th generation winemaker and distiller from Cognac, France. She was born into a family that produced cognacs often used in the blends of bigger brands. Fanny didn’t immediately jump into the family business, studying psychology and sociology in university and working in community and economic development in West Africa for a few years. When she returned to France she was always speaking about cognac, and eventually decided to create her own consumer cognac brand. Her parents thought she was crazy, saying “Only big players can sell cognac,” but after a few iterations, she released her first product, Iris Poivré, in 2013.
Fanny Fougerat considers herself an artist. “My cognacs aren’t blended products, but cognacs by an author, each with their own style,” she explains. As a master cognac distiller, she picked up a lot of what she knows growing up on the family land. She works alongside her fiancé who also comes from a cognac-producing family: Fanny focuses on the distillation, while he focuses on the wine. The Fougerat estate is fifty hectares of vines, located in the Borderies area of the Cognac region; this is the smallest and most prestigious location for cognac producers.
Fanny’s cognacs are stylish, innovative creations with exceptional craftsmanship. Her technical skills, based on generations of knowledge, give her the freedom to bring any idea to life. Using the Ugni Blanc grape variety that grows on the family vines, she controls the creation process every step of the way - from harvesting through to distillation, aging, and bottling. Keeping a sharp eye on the quality, she creates pure, fresh, meticulous spirits without any additives.
Precision and Purity
While Fanny is considered to be an innovator by many, she doesn’t believe she reinvented anything. She believes her cognacs shine through on their own, highlighting the land from which they come. “We want to express nature itself, and the identity of our land,” as she puts it. Her range of exquisite, refined cognacs do just that - and her ancestors would be proud.
