Silent Pool Gin
Two friends with a vision
Like so many stories, Silent Pool starts with a pub. In 2014, Ian McCullough and James Shelbourne met in their local, and quickly realised that they had a lot of other things in common, including a shared dream of setting up a small, local distillery. They located a fresh water source and founded their sustainable distillery upon its banks. Here, they began to produce intricate and precise, artisanal spirits, using locally sourced ingredients.
Ian and James began looking for the perfect spot for their dream distillery. After searching fruitlessly around the south of England, they finally happened upon a spot closer to home – an abandoned farm on the banks of the Silent Pool in the Surrey Hills. Both Surrey locals, they were enchanted by the natural beauty of the area. They found out that the land belonged to the Duke of Northumberland, and contacted him to see if he would allow them to renovate the tumble-down farm buildings and set up their distillery. The Duke agreed, and the former Sherbourne Farm became the newborn Silent Pool Distillery.
As the distillery is in a remote, rural area, Ian and James knew it was even more important to work sustainably and to respect the countryside around them. They covered the distillery’s roof with solar panels, which produce electricity, and all of their organic waste creates methane, which they used to produce electricity. Any remaining waste is used as fertiliser. Their main still is heated using a repurposed steam boiler, fuelled with well-seasoned local hardwood in a bid to keep fuel use to a minimum.
An aromatic rhapsody
Ian and James couldn’t have known, that night in the pub, how fortuitous their meeting would turn out to be. Today, as their ecologically-friendly distillery continues to produce its beautiful small-batch spirits on the green banks of the Silent Pool, they can be proud of their achievements – and raise a glass to all the achievements yet to come.
